Mastering the Serve: Pickleball Rules Every Player Should Know
Share
In pickleball, the serve sets the tone for the rally. Whether you’re a beginner learning the basics or a seasoned player sharpening your game, understanding the rules of the serve is essential. At Firekick, we want every athlete to step onto the court with confidence — so let’s break it down.
The Basics of a Pickleball Serve
Unlike tennis or badminton, the pickleball serve follows unique rules designed to keep the game fair and accessible. Here are the fundamentals:
-
🎯 Underhand Only – The ball must be served with an underhand motion. The paddle must contact the ball below the waist.
-
👟 Feet Behind the Line – Both feet must remain behind the baseline until the ball is struck.
-
➡️ Serve Diagonally – The serve must land in the diagonally opposite service court, beyond the non-volley zone (the “kitchen”).
-
✖️ One Attempt – Players get only one serve attempt, except in the case of a let (when the ball touches the net but still lands in the correct service area).
The Double Bounce Rule
One of pickleball’s signature rules comes right after the serve:
-
The receiving team must let the ball bounce once before returning.
-
The serving team must then let the return bounce once before hitting it.
-
Only after these two bounces are volleys (hitting in the air) allowed.
This keeps rallies longer, fairer, and more exciting.
Scoring & Serving
-
✅ Only the serving team can score points.
-
✅ Games are typically played to 11 points, win by 2.
-
✅ In doubles, both teammates get a chance to serve before the serve switches to the opponents.
