Scoring in Pickleball: Know the Rules, Play the Game
Share
Pickleball is fast, fun, and competitive — but its scoring system can be confusing for beginners. Unlike tennis or badminton, pickleball has a unique scoring rule that every player needs to understand: only the serving team can score points. At Firekick, we’re here to make the rules simple so you can focus on improving your game.
The Core Rule: Only Servers Score
Here’s how it works:
- 🎾 If you’re serving and you win the rally → your team scores a point.
- 🎾 If you’re serving and you lose the rally → no point is awarded, but the serve passes to the next player (or the other team).
- 🎾 If you’re receiving and you win the rally → you gain the serve, not a point.
This system keeps games strategic and makes serving a powerful advantage.
Game Length & Winning Rules
✅ Games are usually played to 11 points, but you must win by 2.
✅ In tournaments, some matches may go to 15 or 21 points.
✅ The first team to meet the score target and lead by 2 wins the game.
Doubles Scoring Made Simple
In doubles, scoring adds a small twist:
- Both players on a team get a chance to serve before the serve switches to the opponents.
- The first server is called “Server 1” and the second is “Server 2.”
-
If both lose their rallies, the other team takes over serving.
That’s why you’ll often hear score calls like “4-2-1” (serving team score – receiving team score – server number).
Firekick Tip: Play Smart with the Scoring Rule
Because only the serving team can score, the serve is your biggest opportunity to gain momentum and control the game. With Firekick paddles, designed for:
- 🎯 Precision sweet spots for accurate serves.
- ⚡ Optimized balance for power and placement.
- 🧬 Durability for long matches.
…you’ll have the edge to convert serves into points consistently.
Pro tip: Aim deep into the opponent’s court on your serve to push them back and set up a strong rally.
Pickleball’s scoring system might feel unusual at first, but once you get the rhythm, it makes the game even more strategic and exciting. Remember: only servers score, games are to 11, and you’ve got to win by 2.
